Test run Mercruiser 228 engine out of water

I have a water tank which will just about accomodate the stern-drive and when full the water level would be about about 6 inches above the inlets on the side of the stern-drive(Mercruiser 1 Drive-Unit). Would it be safe to run the engine with this set-up? Otherwise I'll have to look around for some "ears." Any opinions or is it a case of suck it and see. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Only idle speed in neutral...keep a cold water full force garden hose running into it so the tank remains cool.
