how do you know if a ignition switch is bad ?

You test it with a multimeter....

how do you test with a meter/ have 2 purple wires, one goes choke ,one goes horn. oneblack, oneblack andyellow, one red and purple.

you should have 12v dc going from the switch to the small screw terminal on the starter solenoid. it should be red/yellow you do not have this color listed. is it there? or maybe some other color.

no red/purple is power coming into the switch.

forgot there is a white wire .could that be the wire that goes to solenoid/

go look at the solenoid and see what color is on the terminal, and that there is 12 v DC on it when the key is truned on to start pos.
