Starter binds and then kicksback

Hi all, so I have a local omc shop replace my starter, now when I go to start it it makes a noise almost like an aggressive grind and then kicks back. After a couple of tries it does engage properly. When I called the shop and advised them of this the guy tried to tell me that it was the ring gear that was worn out. The kicker here is that I have just replaced the coupler and inspected the ring gear for wear and it was good.
Could the starter be over engaging?
Any ideas as to the cause...has anyone ever shimmed a marine starter?

Thank you in advance

Ayuh,.... If You just had the motor out, inspected the ring gear, 'n put it back together,.....

Why are you payin' a shop to change yer starter,..??

What's the time frame/ backstory between the 2 events,..??

I've never had to shim a starter,...

If it's the Right starter, 'n the bolts are tight,...
Maybe the shop is Right,....

Only a couple teeth on only 1 side need to get boogered up to ruin it,.....

If you can pull the motor, Do so, pull the flywheel, knock the ring gear off, flip it over, 'n reinstall it,....
It's brand new on the other side,...

Hi thanks for the suggestion.. I took it to the shop as I had other things to get to and I had to get the part from the shop anyways so I just dropped the boat off, the install was only 200$
