? Small parts found on ground after using muffs

Just got Johnson 9.9 seahorse ( ? 1977 ) about 1 week ago. I put the muff on it and it ran like a charm but I noticed a small screw with star washer and another piece of metal lying on the ground.
The other piece was rectangle shaped with "u" shaped in end of it. What are these pieces? Guy said water pump was just replaced, does this have anything to do with it. thanks, jb
 
Sounds like the shift rod connecter ------------If it shifts OK it was obviously lost and replaced.------Is the screw 5/8" long with 1/4-28 NF thread ?
 
The screw is 1/4" long with a star lock washer on it. The other piece is flat rectangle with one hole on one side and u shape on the other side. Yes my motor shifts fine.
