I have a VP 300hp 454 block th

I have a VP 300hp 454 block that's raw water cooled - can i run a garden hose to a through hull fitting and then start the engine to be sure everythings OK before launch? - I've always had outboards so I'm new to these engines - Also - do i need to put earmuffs (for water) to the outdrive? Thanks for any help - Tom
