repower question?

So I'm in the market for a new motor for my jon boat and I have been looking at new motors!
so I am currently running a 2 stroke 1988 6hp johnson which has been great but is showing her age and faltering so my question is about power comparison from 2 stroke to 4 stroke, I've been told that my old 2 stroke 6hp has got more power than a 4 stroke 6hp. can anyone verify this? And so with this in mind I am thinking I should look upwards to a 8 or maybe 9.8hp Tohatsu.
Any opinions and info are welcome on this and thank you.

HP is HP, and is rated by the government. The 4/5/6 4-stroke will not have the same hole shot as a 2-stroke, because it has more moving mass (the cam and bits). The end output is the same.

The 8/9.8 is excellent, because it's a 2-cylinder, and runs a lot smoother. However, it is heavier; about 84 pounds in short/rope.

What is the boat rated for?

The 88 model 6 HP Johnson is just a sweet motor.-----I would be doing some trouble shooting on it.-----Hopefully you have been running it at 50:1 with a good oil.
