Replace worn drive gear on starter motor?

The starter gear is worn on my 1990 90HP motor. The top part of each tooth is chewed up. There is a much smaller amount of similar damage on the flywheel, I'm not too concerned about that. I don't hear grinding when I start the engine. When I watch, it looks like the starter gear jumps up high enough to engage the flywheel with its good part.

Would it be wise to replace it anyway? (It would have to come later anyway because there are more important things to repair first) I can post a photo if that helps.

If I replace it, it looks like it might be a good idea to buy a starter motor, because they are not a whole lot more expensive. I could take the gear off and put the new starter motor aside.
