repair botched thread in trim cylinder-hose fitting

I have a fitting hole that has botched threads.
This is a flare fitting at the prop end of an alpha 1 trim cylinder.
I know auto zone sells a repair plug that you tap the cylinder 1/2 20, and it spins in and seals to the flare taper at the bottom and gives you the new 3/16 hose fitting(3/8-24)
These fitting are pretty long though. There is not much room on the back angled fitting of the alpha.
Has anyone used this fitting for a repair? Does it work or is there a shorter one?
I see these fittings on rebuilt cylinders.

Can I hook up just 1 cylinder to trailer?
Can I just loop the hose back to the manifold when I remove the cylinder?(and 1 hose?)

if you loop the hose, the other cylinder will not work - oil takes the path of least resistance, and a looped hose has no resistance

if you could find caps or plugs, you could block the hoses on the one side - but hard to find caps or plugs like that

spend the $120 on a new cylinder.
