Putting Lower Unit in Forward Reverse

Oh my I'm in trouble. I put new waterpump in Johnson 150 hp. My grandson started engine oh my. I put the shift (LU) I forward Reverse net just fine. I put boat shifter into fwd. I shift LU into fwd fine. I hear no click sound when I shifted it to fwd it locks in gear. I give prop check is fine but turn prop ting bit CC it goes into neutral. Is that correct?

I have 1969 Mercury 140hp inboard.
my I'm in trouble. I put new waterpump in Mercury 140hp inboard. My grandson started engine oh my. I put the shift (LU) I forward Reverse net just fine. I put boat shifter into fwd. I shift LU into fwd fine. I hear no click sound when I shifted it to fwd it locks in gear. I give prop check is fine but turn prop ting bit CCW it goes into neutral. Is that correct? Ok in neutral prop is free.
Should I put cabin shift in. Neutral will that work ok?
