OMC 9.5 Long Shaft Lower Unit

Stripgear

New member
I helped a guy clean out his garage and he gave me what looks like a 9.5 long shaft lower unit. When I went to put it back together after working on it I noticed the shift rod does not have the indentations to lock it into position that I am used to seeing on the short shafts. Is this correct or was this thing made on a Friday afternoon?

There would be no difference in components between a long and short as far as I know.----Based on some experience I think you have a 10 HP lower unit.----Is there a 5" difference on length of the shift rod , yes or no ?

I never thought of that. I've already put it back together, but it both the driveshaft and shifting rod are approx 6" longer than a known 9.5. See pic. I'll take it apart if I need to.

The one on the left is a 9.5.------The one on the right appears to be a 10 HP.------A long shaft 9.5 would have a drive shaft that is--- EXACTLY--- 5 " longer than the short one.
