Oil where silencer case meets throttle body

Pulled silencer case off to clean thermostats and noticed some oil where the case goes into the rubber throttle body neck. Not too much maybe a 1/2 tsp on my glove. 2nd motor also had some oily residue in same place but not as wet.

cause for concern or expected? Thought this was all airflow - not sure how engine oil would be in here ...

Hi,

It's most likely crankcase breather vapors that have condensed. This tends to happen as the engine rings wear and compression "blow-by" increases.

Not a huge reason for concern unless it becomes excessive and the engine is losing compression.

This can also be caused by carbon buildup on the pistons. This can cause the compression rings to "stick" in their lands (grooves) and not make a good seal at the cylinder walls.

Running a decarb product like Ring Free or Techron II can help with mitigating carbon buildup in an engine. There are many other approaches to "de-carbing" an engine involving a host of products and methods including using water. You would want to thoroughly investigate and understand risks before trying any of them though.

Good luck.

Good luck.
