oil running down midshaft section on 1993 Johnson 15hp

Anyone know why there would be oil all over the midsection on a 93 Johnson 15hp ?

Anyone seen this before and know what's up with it ?

Should I be worried ?

I changed the sparkplugs but it's still doing it

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Look for a fuel leak on the pump and gas lines.------Gasolines evaporates and oil runs down the motor.-----Fix it.

Don't use ethanol, it eats rubber and plastic parts. What is your mixing ratio?.....yuck. Are you tilting the motor up with the fuel line attached?

I try to use non-ethanol but that's not always possible.

Oil mix is 50:1 ... and I use a SeaChoice oil to gas measuring bottle so it should be accurate.

No on the tilting, so that doesn't apply

I think it may be because I disconnected the fuel line and let it run out of gas to let the carburetor empty out.

I'm gonna test that theory next time

May need a carb kit with a new needle. Ethanol will damage even Viton, which is often used on the float needle tips. When you remove the carb, turn it upside down with the float bowl removed. See if the float rests parallel with the carburator body.

Carb kit with new needle is good idea. That bad leak could cause engine run lean, which is no good. Dont drive before leak is fixed.

What kind of fuel tank ?----And is this tank hooked up all the time in sunlight ?----This leakage should be an easy fix !

Thanks for all the help and suggestions I sincerely appreciate it.

Not sure yet but I think I may have found the problem ...

Does the Float bowl suppose to have one or two plug screws ?

Seems I may be missing one ??

((Also I tightened up most of the screws on the bottom of the float bowl)) (a couple of them weren't tight)

If I am missing one of the plug screws can I just buy one at the local hardware store ?

Or do I need to order the OEM plug ?

Somebody elsewhere told me it's only suppose to have one plug screw so I guess that's not the problem

I tightened up the screws on the bottom of the float bowl and tightened the powerhead bolts

I'm gonna run it again next weekend and see if any of that helped

If that doesn't fix it then I guess a carb rebuild would be the next choice

I'm going to stick with my answer on Post number 8. Make sure float is parallel with carburetor float bowl casting surface when carburetor is held upside down with new needle assembly in place. Be very careful not to apply any pressure on that needle's surface.....only the weight of the float.
