Newbie Help: Engine Choices

OK here goes it. I'm shopping around for something in the 225-250 hp range. It looks like the late model two strokes are pretty reasonable.
Where can I go to find info on what not to buy as far as Merc, what to look out for, etc.
I realize this is a broad question, but when you are new you gotta start somewhere.
Also, what about other brands as far as what to stay away from.

Do you have a good / trustworthy dealer or shop nearby ??-----------Do you want to do any maintenance yourself ??---How many hrs a year do you operate the boat ??-----Many of the newer motors must be dealer maintained and that can add up.----Sometimes an older motor in good condition is a better deal.

No Suzuki engines or Johnson/Evinrude Ficht engines.
Newer Mercury Optimax is a good choice.
You cannot go wrong with a Yamaha 2 or 4stroke or a Honda.
