New to this forum, new to engines, what is a TKS

Turn Key Start
It's a carbureted engine that is supposed to start like it has fuel injection.
i.e., you just turn the key - no pumping or opening the throttle

Note the use of the word "supposed"... If you start your engine every day or every other day, it does do that... HOWEVER!!! if your engine sits long enough for the gas in the carb's bowl to evaporate totally out, then you will be doing some engine cranking and pumping (long enough for the electric fuel pump to refill the bowl) ... Here in coastal NJ gas disappears easily between Sunday afternoon and Saturday morning.
 
Ayuh,... TKS is Mercruiser's attempt to help stupid people become boaters...

Key word is Attempt...
 
Just turn the ignition switch on for 3 seconds then off several times so the fuel pump will fill the carb bowl.
