Mercury 40hp 2007 2 stroke 2 cyl help with timing

Hi, I purchased the above motor as in title and is discovered that at idle it would pop and backfire at idle so I adjusted the mixture screw no differance so I adjusted the timing 3 turns ran great but that obviously meant that the timing was out so the timing needs to be checked with a light, bought one, connected it and it said 2 deg the idle timing should be 8 deg at 650 to 800 rpm my question is on one side of TDC it says 40 to 0 deg then the other side of TDC it says to 12deg which side should the timing flash light up the 8 deg on the 40 deg side or 8 deg on the 12 deg side, sorry that my explanaton is not the best as all it says on the flywheel 8 deg for idle and 25 deg at 3000 rpm, thankyou for any help in solving my problem.

hi i have a 2001 2 stroke 2 cyl with the same 8 deg at 650 to 800 rpm mine is 8 BTDC witch is on the 40 deg side
