Mercury 3.5hp four stroke leaks oil while transporting on side

Hi there,

I’m struggling to find any information on this issue, so I was hoping someone could help.

I recently bought a second hand Mercury 3.5hp four stroke boat motor (model 1F03201KK) and it has been leaking oil like crazy when I’m driving to a lake. I always place it on its side with the “right side up” and I set it in an old car tire to prevent it from bouncing around in my truck bed. For whatever reason every time I arrive at my destination my truck bed is covered in oil.

Here is what I’ve tried:

I did a test run where I left the motor on its side overnight at my house and when I checked on it in the morning there was only a couple of drops on the floor. (Probably just oil that has accumulated in the plastic casing on the motor)

I’ve tried tightening the oil fill cap, but no luck.

I tried to figure out where the oil is coming from, but unfortunately by the time I get home from fishing everything is coated in oil so it’s hard to tell where the source is.

Please help me! This motor is basically brand new and runs great. Im just tired of cleaning up oil 😂
