Hi all,

I've just bought a small rib with a motor, and I think the motor is missing some parts. I'm struggling to find the engine model as the whole thing has been painted several times over the years. If anyone can give me a steer on what I might have on my hands so I can get a manual or parts list I'd really appreciate it.

The motor currently tries to start as soon as the battery is connected, which scared the crap out of me first time! So I assume the ignition is missing, theres alost no spark when engines turning over, but there are plenty of wires not connected. All help greatefully recieved

Tia

Going to need the markings that are on the carburetor and the markings that are on the CDI box.
Hi, thanks for your reply, theres a mark on the carb, but nothing on the cdi. I'd seen a part number on backside on one of the vids i'd watched, but this one has nothing (n)

Looks like my mariner (4 hp 2 stroke 1989 and runs perfectly), except your motor is larger with 2 cyl I think. There should be a decal with model/code/serial# located on the clamp bracket (near the tightening screws used to secure the motor to the stand or transom). I think those green wires or red connect to the missing ignition switch. Find the decal, download a service manual, and start troubleshooting the ignition system - assuming you've already got clean ethanol free fuel (add stabilizer if you don't have access to ethanol free), and ensure fuel is getting from the fuel pump to the carburetor, clean/replace any inline fuel filters...then attack ignition system components.

Unfortunately the plates are unreadable, they've been several different colours over the years and when i cleaned them up I couldnt read them. possibly something dodgys gone on, but it must have been a lot of years ago as it's been painted 3 colours since then and looks like its been in a shed for last 5 years

That square wiring component looks like a rectifier for converting the AC from coil to DC for battery. If the decal is missing then look on the starboard side of the engine block for a stamp, should be the serial# or model.

I actually searched till I found a motor like mine in a manual and used it for years before I ever knew the year it was manufactured. You could just search for a late 80's/early 90's 40 hp mariner service manual and you'd be good to go. You'll be able to tell right away which is similar or an exact match to yours fairly quickly.
