Hi all, newbie here so please forgive me if I seem a little green behind the gills! 
I have just inherited a Mercury 40hp outboard engine and I know nothing about boat engines!
I have searched the serial number all over the net but keep drawing a blank. Having looked around this forum there seems to be a few people that know how to locatethe information I am looking for so I'm hoping someone can help.
The information I do have from the engine plate is:
Mariner 40 ML
6E9 L 306563
Made in Japan (with a K in the bottom right corner)
I cannot find anything related to this serial number anywhere.
I am after as much information I can get as I have no clue whatsoever, I couldn't even tell you if it is a long or short shaft, it looks long lol.
Whilst I am here, could anyone offer any advice on its value as it is? I am in the UK.
The engine was kept in a storage container for several years so I know nothing of its working condition. It looks pretty clean and tidy under the cover but what do I know?I have been told that it was used and flushed on the day it was stored but not sure how accurate that is.
I have tried to add some pics but it won't let me add jpeg's for some reason?
