Mariner 200hp 6 cyl question

I have recently purchased a Mariner 200 hp outboard motor that satrted giving problems from the get go. The mech said that the flywheel was cracked ( by a broken stater(sp) - my question is what caused this all - is it just wear n tear or is there something more involved i should think about?

Depending on year model the 2 piece flywheel can crack the flex plate and damage stator or if a one piece an magnet can come loose and damage stator and flywheel. Both are usually causd by improper reassembly techniques such as using impact wrench to remove/install flywheel...
