Lower unit questions

I have what I believe to be a late 60s or early 70s 9.8 lower in good shape in looking at buying a 9.8 motor with a busted lower of the same yrs but it is a short shaft with the tall shift rod. Mine has the short rod my question is can I swap it out.

Swap the shift rod and everything else be the same. Thanks
