lower unit noise

I have noises in the lower unit while the motor is in neutral. In gears it is OK. I am suspecting the clutch dog has some issues. Can someone with experience in this area tell me whether the what could go wrong with the clutch dog that makes noise and can it be fix? thanks in advance

In nuetral the clutch dog does NOT move, it does nothing.-----So if there is a noise it is because either forward or the reverse gear is rubing on it.-----------Time to adjust your shift cable at the motor,------If one way does not make it better than go the other way.

I've made a small adjustment on the cable and no more noise.

FYI that small cable adjustment could very wel have saved you thousands of dollars on a gearcase . Minor details prevent major problems.
