johnson 48 spl

i just bought a 16 foot heavy flat bottom with the 48 spl ! somebody replaced the water pump and now it is in gear in neutral position. i read how to adjust this problem seems to be to shift rod wont adjust to required measurements. any suggestions appreciated

Remove lower unit.---------Put lower unit in nuetral.-----------Screw shift rod in or out to get the required measurement.---Re-install.

thats the problem i dont know if they messed something up or what but the rod wont screw in far enough to get the right measurement it's about 1/8 in off! any suggestions appreciated

Ok ----you are measuring from where to where ????

i measured from the flat on the foot to center of bolt on the shift rod 21 15/16 is what i was told ? i need about 3/16 to get that and the rod is very tight ? when i put lower unit back in place to get the bolt back in it goes in gear with shifter in neutral position

Unthread the shift rod and pull it out to inspect threads on the end.
