How can I remove this deposit from the mid section?

I'm guessing many of us have got this on our mid-section..... I don't know what it is but I'd like to remove it if possible.

looks like lack of paint, Wet sand with 300-400 grit wetndry paper, tack cloth, and repaint. Your exhaust runs through there, Make sure your engine is running a normal temperature

It's actually a deposit on top of the paint. It might be limescale or something similar that is being deposited due to the heat from the exhausts.

Well I went with my gut feeling and decided it was limescale so I dug out some teak restorer that contains hydrochloric acid and tested it on a bit of paintwork. Nothing fell off so i used a small paintbrush to cover the 'deposit' and slightly agitate it. I was greeted by a satisfying mild fizzing and after a few mins I was done.
Washed it off with fresh water, gave it a quick rub with T Cut and it's gone from this...

I use CLR and white vinegar with a scotch pad.
