Gray tach wire grounded out at vro

1998 Johnson 115 GLECM Replaced water pump. Took to lake to see if everything worked ok which it did. While running about 3500, tach started bouncing then quit. Ran for a while, took home.
Was checking to see if tach needle would move when ignition was turned on. Heard two clicks from motor. Then smoke from regulator area. Disconnected battery immediately. Last September put in a maintenance free starting battery.
Now checking wiring, gray wire going to vro is grounded out. When tach signal was lost would this have effected vro. Would tach not working set off system check?
