Gear oil for 290sp

My manual says to use 30 or 40w engine oil but that was written in 1985. I’ve been using 30w in it but want to know if there is anything better or is 30w still preferred? I replaced the original outdrive 3 or 4 years ago with a rebuilt one so want to do what’s best. Thanks for any help.
