Fuel Tank Guage Float

Hi All

On Friday I dropped the float guage into the fuel tank (no fuel was in there as it has recently been cleaned out) and having just spent 2 days trying to fish it out through the small guage hole, I've given up. Will it be OK to leave in there loose if I fit a new one ?

Probably not OK. When you fill the tank with fuel, the old gauge will likely float to the top and slosh around and foul the new one. That said...
How big is your boat? Is it on blocks or a trailer? Where in the boat is the tank?
If you can get the boat to be tilted down towards the gauge hole, pouring some water in the tank it should encourage the old gauge to move towards the hole.
