Fuel preference?

Do carburated 2 strokes run better on lower octane gas or higher octane gas? I have a 1999 Mercury 200 that I purchased a couple of months ago. Since I bought it I have been using premium gas, but have noticed some idling problems after the engine has run for and hour or so.

It may depend on your state, but here there is no ethanol in premium. Never use ethanol fuel in a carburated engine. Be it your boat, lawn mower, etc. Ethanol can result in hard starting, among other problems.
