I cannot for the life of me get the forward gear on my '87 25hp Evinrude to mesh with my pinion gear. I've made sure the forward gear bearing race and pinion gear bearings are installed correctly. I can slip the forward gear past the pinion gear just fine but it seems to be 5 degrees off from laying flush on the forward gear bearing making it unable to mesh with the pinion gear every time.
If you have any tips or tricks please share. The only way I've been able to get it to mate is by removing a thrust washer from the pinion stack but that's obviously not a final solution.
