exterior fuel tank

I got a old 1.5 hp evinrude motor at the flea market today for $50 They guy said it ran but when i got it home i realised the tan was extremly rusty inside. So i hooked it up to a small fuel tank i had laying around. It ran like a champ but only if i kept squeezing the pump on the fuel line. There was plenty of fuel in the tank it is a 3/8 line running up to the motor then it is adapted down to 5/16. Anyone know how i can keep it running or does it need the fuel tank that was on it to let gravity feed it fuel.

I would think if it was desighned for gravity flow,then yes clean and use fuel tank that was on it or find another one like it.
