" Hey I'm not much of a mechanic and I need some advice. I have an Elgin boat motor 571-58221 I believe it is a 2HP. It cranks on the first pull every time, but as soon as it gets warm it starts to backfire and die. Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

" Without knowing much about that engine, my .02 on engines in general. If it runs well at first, but then starts to screw up after a period of time, I'd be most concerned with fuel. Possibly there is an issue with getting fuel up to the carb, I'm not sure how that fuel pump works - it might lack a pump and be the type that requires pressure in the tank etc.. Try using a priming bulb to pump fuel up to it and see if it stays running well that way. In addition - a cold engine likes more fuel, as they warm up they prefer to run a little leaner, it could be running too rich once it's warm due to the choke being left on or an over-rich jet etc.. It could also be some type of compression (lack of) issue that occurs as it heats up.
