Drive Shaft Oil Seals Replacement

New member here waiting on parts to rebuild the water pump on my 9.9. On the gear housing parts diagram on this site for my 1994 Mariner 9.9, it shows loc tite 271 to be applied to the outer edges of the drive shaft seals that go into the water pump housing. Is this necessary and if so, is it applied to the outer edges of both seals? Thanks.

If it is in the directions it is necessary. Apply it to both seals.

That's been a standard recommendation on all seals for years but people (including me) don't bother.

Use the locktite.....
