What would cause a engine with 5 hours to BLOW a head gasket?.

Just throwing out ideas...but what was the oil pressure before it blew? I had a intake manifold gasket on a brand new engine bulge out in one spot on me and I ended up not figuring it out until it was installed and broken in. Did you check your head bolt torque? Were they where they were supposed to be? IIRC your supposed to check torque on the bolts during certain intervals as they "seat" when the engine is getting broken in. More info might be helpful as well.

brand new or reman?

are you sure its the head gasket (vs just a loss of compression)?

If you will perform a cylinder leak-down test prior to removing the cylinder heads, you will find out where the problem is.

Back to your question…..... common causes are overheating, incorrect torque value, Etc!
