"I'm not sure how to tell if my engine can charge the battery, I have a 1980 45 hp Chrysler #459HOJ. I bought a new battery for it ran the lake for awhile and turned in. I went to start it and the battery was dead. Anyone help?"

"Take off the hood and see wha

"Take off the hood and see what wires you have under there.

If your model can charge a battery, there will be two wires on the same large post (on one side of the solenoid) - one will be the hot lead (usually red) coming up from the battery - a second (usually red wire) will also be on that post and it will come from a regulator or rectifier located somewhere on the powerhead.

The second large solenoid post will connect a wire to the starter.

The negative wire from the battery should just go to somewhere convenient on the block.

If the "hot" wire from the battery is the only wire at the point where it connects to the solenoid, then your model does not charge.

In any event, the battery should not have died overnight.

Assuming the battery is sound, you probably have a power leak that is draining the battery..."
