Can’t get Johnson TD-20 5hp mid unit on

Hi everyone, I’ve been trying to get the mid unit back on my motor, there is this tube that sits on the top of it that is like a driveshaft isolation tube for the mid unit. It seems like it is too long and the mid unit is like a 1/4 of an inch from being on fully, I was wondering if I could cut this tube shorter or just remove it all together?

I don't know what the problem is. But I say avoid cutting anything. It was on there 70 years ago, so it should fit now.

Yeah, I ended up just not installing it, it’ll be fine
