Any Cheap Way to Get Honda Outboard History?

I have a 2006 Bf135 & Bf8 and have had zero problems with either motor. I am more curious about my usage and am interested in hours used on my motor and maybe a bit more. Nothing more than curious and maybe track when to change oil, etc. I didn't have much good luck looking up this topic here but is there a cheap way to do this? Do dealerships charge much for this info? I have no relationship with any dealer as I purchased these used when they were only a year old, and closest one is 70 miles away. And sorry if the topic has been addressed many times over already.

dunl,

Welcome to the Forum!

Probably the best thing to do in this case would be for you to download the FREE owners manuals for your outboards. Those will have service info like hour intervals and capacities.

If you want a bit more, there are some free shop manuals out there but I can't recommend any because I don't use them. I don't use them because I don't trust their accuracy. I always buy the authorized shop manual for what I work on. But, they are NOT cheap.

Below is a link you can use to navigate for the owner's manuals

Good luck.

I was hoping for electronic information that is stored in the engine computer. From the lack of responses is sounds like Honda makes it impossible without a trip to a dealer for a price. Is that correct?

unless they have a meter on them or attached to the controls, I am not aware of a way to hook up a computer and have it kick it back to you. I imagine that is impossible on the 8HP. I could be wrong, just never heard of that, but then again I am not a Honda certified mechanic either and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

No cheap way....but there are several Dr. H or Dr H look a likes out there that you can load onto your computer.

This is not a recommendation of any of them....just pointing out....that there seem to be some out there. Read, study and check reviews, etc, before you decide to buy.

There are probably others out there, but you get the idea....

eneusiis....there is no way to get the history on an 8 HP. However, you can put a small hour meter on the motor to keep track of the hours. This is just one of the small tachs available.

There are probably cheaper ones out there, if you do a good internet search. It is simple to install. One wire gets connected to a ground and the other wire wraps around a spark plug wire. You can mount it under the cover of the engine or mount it externally, if you are ambitious.

Yes I knew that 8HP motors not having a computer controlled ECU have anything and I did put one of those hour meters on my kicker and the internal battery died within a year, so useless. I just know that many of my friends with Mercs and Evinrudes were given complete histories when they blew up the power heads, like how many rpms for how long, total hours of engine running, etc., very detailed. "Does Honda do that?" was my question and it seems the answer is yes, for a couple hundred dollars if you buy a CD and cord. I have not heard anyone go to a dealer and ask to run history either so this must be pointless because of reliability. Never ever in 10 years of ownership has it been within 50 miles of a Honda service center.

I'm using HealTech ODB Tool to conect to my BF225. It cost about 200$. You can see all engine data in real time while working (in graph too), fault codes and depends from engine computer other data. In My engine I can read stored in ECU memory total engine hours, engine hours on WOT, hours on trolling, hours on mid rpm, on idle, how many times V-tec was engaged, how many times engine was started, how many times overrev and some other things, that is cool.

I haven't seen Genuine Honda diagnostic tool. I think that HealTech don't have acces to all functions of the ECU (it can only read parameters and clear fault codes), but it is nice and not so expensive tool to have. (I don't know maybe genuine Honda ODB tool have the same abilities maybe more, for me HealTech is quite basic tool).
