Hard to start. After running a bit and open it up to higher speed motor dies and cannot get it started again.

Does it shut off instantly like a switch was flipped(electrical) or slowly die(fuel starvation)? The more information you can provide the more likely you will get suggestions/ides.

What is your starting procedure ?----Is it 4 stroke or 2 stroke.----How did it run for you last season ?

it's a 2 stroke. dies sputtering like fuel starvation. it ran fine 2 season ago. last season this issue showed up. I choke and prime it to start.

Do you run the fuel out of the carburetor before engine sits dormant for a month or so ?
