94 Johnson oil leak at pinion retainer screw in gearcase

Can I remove retainer screw and replace o-ring without concern for internals ? This screw is identified as part number 324852 in parts diagram.

You can take that screw out all day long.----Nothing will happen.----That screw prevents bearing from moving due to oil pressure.----Take it out and replace the o-ring.
