Also replaced brushes and Bendix gear on starter. Starter works fine off motor. engages flywheel but can't turn it. Burned out starter solenoid trying to start it. Flywheel seems very hard to turn. Takes 48ft/lb to turn it with the plugs out. Is that too much?

Way too much torque to turn it over.---How long have you owned the motor and what happened to the motor.---------------Lower unit oil checked ?

have worked on motor off and on for 3 years. Motor was completely worn out. Bored cylenders, new crank. bearings, pistons, rings, electronics, etc. new oil in lower unit.

Well something is wrong !!------------When you installed the crankshaft did you locate the upper and middle bearings on the dowels in the block.----------Or did you sort of bolt it together ?----Did you line up verify alignment of rod caps ?

Thanks for your advice. But i can find no mention of "line up verify alignment of rod caps " in the seloc mercury manual for this model. Could you explain what you mean?

These rod caps are " fractured " when made.------Thus on assembly they can not be mixed up or turned end for end.-------They must be carefully lined up for a perfect fit.----------The SELOC manuals can be a help , but most useful for wiping up the shop floor.----Or used in the small house with the half moon in the door !!
