Hi All
I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a 1978 Merc 4.5 that didn't run
Looking it over I see that there must have been some type of major short as coil and ground wire are all decoated :eek:
I am replaceing them and have filed the points so I don't have to spend LARGE $$$ to replace them.
My questions is, what is the contact setting? I was going to just start off with 0.016, but would rather just set them right the 1st time since I don't have a manual.

The correct point gap for your engine is .020" The ignition design is called Phasemaker Ignition, I bet your set of point looked really burnt and pitted didn't they? It's quite normal because this system fires when the points are closed not open like most other magneto systems. Hopefully your coil and wiring are not degraded from overheating. You will need to install a new impeller anyway before starting this engine up.
