having the top cylinder not firing, electrical stuff is good( two days of testing and changing parts), talking with local shop, he said could be to much gas, really?, carb cleaned several times, its good, soooo ,just took pump off side of engine and squeezed bulb, should gas come out pulse hole in back of pump?  please say no, just about to give up and take it to the shop

Really ----if there is a flood of gas from the pump your shop is correct !!----If gas pours out then the pump diaphragm is ruptured.----Ultra simple to replace diaphragm.---Less than $10 to repair.

well the second old pump got everything back to normal, frustrating a fuel pump would cause a problem that looked electrical, but i learned one more thing about this old outboard

Racerone...you are correct if a person has the kind of experience and aptitude you do. For some troubleshooting an outboard will be difficult no matter how they think.;) Good thing there are still some master mechanics around like yourself to help make the boating world a better place!

Sorry mate-------Every time you squeeze the manual fuel pump you are TESTING !!----You need to feel the fuel pumping and filling the carburetor.-----The bulb MUST go hard.----You are testing the fuel system-----And if you run the carburetors dry when boat goes on the trailer you are also testing.--- If motor runs for a certain length of time the there was adequate fuel in the carburetors.----Empty carburetors stay clean !!
