400 stringer ball gears

going to replace upper housing with another used, old one siezed up. worried about items to be done "while I'm in there". should ball gears be replaced since they won't be mates anymore? can gears be replaced w/o pulling retainers on both intermediate and upper housing, as to not disturb the seals? On used upper... seller says was rebuit 2 yrs. pryor, do you think water pump or seals should be done "while I'm in there"? OH! 1980, 400 str., 3.0 ltr.

All 400 and 800 series uppers 1978-1985 use the same housing.
You just have to get the right gear ratio, and you might have to swap steering worm gear from old to new if different (there are RH and LH steering sets)

ball gears of similar % wear can be used together, replace as a set if more than 50% worn, or worn on a 45 degree angle from running tilted
