40 hp 2 stroke motor - power and trim issues

After replacing the solenoid, the motor now starts but after a minute or two it dies. The tach jumps all over the place before the motor dies. Once the motor stops we are unable to start it or use the trim but after a few seconds both work again. The engine worked well for about 2 hours after replacing the solenoid. We've checked and cleaned all connections and checked voltage. Nothing seems wrong. Would a failing ignition switch act like this?
