4.3 ratteling on excelleration

installed a newer engine in a 93 scarab, with a adapter manifiold, replaced distribitor, attempted to set timing, mark is bouncing around, when I run it in water, engine has a rattle on excelleration, stops once level off, starts again when giving it gas, has great oil pressure, thinking it is detonating, this is a 08 automotive engine, from a salvage yard low miles. is it likely I got a bad distributor? or do I need to replace timing chain? also have installed 2 electric fuel pumps, and when it sat for about 3 weeks, now pump wont pull gas, filters are clean. guess its time to order another

water will kill a electric pump and air.

What dist you got in there a marine one ? And starter ? And alt. ?

marine dist, and starter, dist came from napa, and is suppose to be marine, and it is carburated

Detonating---what degrees is the timing set? What cam are you running? With a low mileage engine one would think the timing chain is good. Are the fuel pumps made in China?
