1993 25hp merc 2-stroke

There is oil leaking at the prop. I took off the prop and confirmed the oil leak. I assume it must be lower unit oil. The lower unit has not been hit - prop and skeg are mint.

Before I have a mechanic look at it, I would like to know......

(A) what is the probable source of the leak and
(B) can i fix it myself.

Do a lot of trolling ???-------was it run on a hose in the driveway ???----------------If so it may be normal to see that oil.---------------If you are really worried then have the lower unit pressure tested to see if there is an actual leak !!

Take the prop off and start looking for fishing line around the prop shaft seal,usual culprit. this site sells repair manuals at a pretty good price, judge for yourself if you can fix it or not.

Like Racerone says,
pressure test is the next step.

If it smells like gas it is unburnt 2-stroke oil. If it smells like rotten eggs its lower-unit oil.

I have a simular problem except..after running it on hose, a small amount of thick, black oil drips out under the foot. I just got this motor and immediately had to replace starter and electric choke then I test ran it on the hose and found this oil drip! It is thick, almost like a very black 90 weight that drains out the foot with the water. 1986 Mercury 45 hp Classic 50

This is normal to leak after running on a hose.
