2009 yamaha 25hp wont go in reverse/neutral

Hey guys,
My 09 Yamaha 25 wont go into reverse and when its it's in neutral it goes forward. I've checked the shift linkage and it's fine. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance.

Disconnect the shift link, manually push the lower shift shaft down whilst turning the prop until it goes into reverse. Then shift control into reverse and then reconnect shift shaft

So I tried that and the shift rod wont stay in reverse when I try to push it down.

You are not pushing it all the way, you must use a fair amount of force and turn the prop slowly at the same time and it will lock in reverse. Just confirm it was fine before you pulled it apart

Got neutral to not engage but it wanting to still slip when trying to go into reverse. I'm thinking it may be a bad clutch dog
