2004 / 150 hp 4stroke Bucks/bangs under power

I replaced a gear cable 3 weeks ago and the engine ran without any problems. Went fishing yesterday and when the engine is in gear regardless of speed a bang or jolt from the engine is experienced, almost like you are hitting bottom or an object which has not been the case. No change in speed occurs and it occurs irradically with no predictability although not there is some frequency. Could bad fuel do this or a prop slipping? Sounds like something is suddennly engaging like popping a clutch in a stick shift. Any thoughts?

The natural thing to check is what just was changed...

When you replaced the cable, did you lock down the lock nuts at the ends?

Did you lock down the end connectors?

Is the cable anchor on the engine still in place? You should not have had to remove it to change the cable, but stranger things have happened.

Is the cable still adjusted correctly or did something slip?

Check the gear lube and check for any metal fragments. Also, check the level to be sure that it is full of gear lube. Open the top hole and put a small wire in it to see if it is up the the top hole.
