2001 Johnson 90 hp Bogs of idle

money drain

I have a 2001 Johnson 90hp, engine starts and idles fine. Runs great at high rpms and on plane. Transitioning from idle to putting it in gear and initial acceleration it bogs down. Some times I can finesse it through, but often times it will bog down and stall. Due to other problems the ignition pack and optical sensor are new and this problem existed before the replacement of those parts.

If the motor is left sitting with fuel in the carburetors then likely they need cleaning.-------A fact that every outboard owner should know !!!---------------Run carburetors dry when done boating.

60 degree OMC motors seem to develop a heat soak issue when the stats and / or water pump get old. They cold start fine, generally run fine, but bog and stall on acceleration shortly after a hot start. Not sure if this is your problem or not. Make sure it's running 140 degrees at idle. Change water pump and stats as needed to get temp right. Do a sync and link. Make sure the timing arm starts to move at the exact same time as the throttle plates. If all this fails, richen up the idle jets on the carbs ever so slightly. 1/8 turn is usually plenty. Note that an idle mix that allows for good acceleration is a quarter turn or so richer than the mix that gives the smoothest idle.
