my 2001 BF75 spits and sputters at idle, but when I throttle up it seems to run fine. I removed and cleaned the carbs in an ultrasonic cleaner. the #1 cylinder is not firing until i throttle up. seems to be getting fuel and fire @ idle, compression is even across all cylinders @ 175-180. Getting frustrated

Assuming that spark and spark plug are good.....

It appears that you either still have not cleaned the idle circuit (or debris has gotten into the jet set (part #18) http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2001/BF90A1 LRTA/CARBURETOR/parts.html

or that carb is way out of sync

or idle mixture screws are not set correctly. 2 1/4 turns out.

Thanks Mike! before i disassemble the carb again, i'm going to check and and reset the idle mixture screw first and check the spark aspect too. have no way of checking the sync of the carbs (tool or knowledge) so I will leave that to the pros if it comes to it. I also noticed that my squeeze ball on my fuel line will sometimes go soft on me, probably will replace the fuel line too
