2000 Mercury 225HP ECU Failure

My IGN ECU smoked yesterday. Any idea what would cause this?

I'm restoring a Pontoon boat with this motor and its the first time it was started, it ran fine for about 5 minutes and then died. The ECU was extremely hot and leaking Black gue. After it say for about 10 minutes it fired right back up but the ECU started smoking again, so I shut it off.

Is engine overheating thus burning up electronics?

Check the grounds as sounds like motor isolated/high resistance from battery....
