2000 125 hp will not start

i have a 2000 125 hp 2 stroke that just quit running. i replaced the stator the motor seemed fine went to take the boat out we went out about 100 yards from the dock and the motor died. the motor will turn over it will not crank but will back fire. i have checked the coils with a spark pug gap tester and all 4 coils are firing across a 7/16'' gap. this is what the manual says it should have. can some one tell me what might be the problem thanks kevin

I agree with that being a good place to look since you had to remove it to do stator work. Backfiring can be caused by timing out of sync causing an explosion when the piston intake port is open. A mistimed flywheel is a source for that problem. Check the condition of the flywheel key. If it is anything but perfectly square it could be your smoking gun. On that engine, as I reall flywheel torque is 150 PSI.
